Final Maggie This Week

Well, it's been a while since we last heard from Max and Maggie, but the final book in the Maggie series will be available very soon. It's going to be a big book because there's a lot of sordid ground to cover.

It's written and currently being edited. I ain't going to go too much into how I feel right now because that's the kind of thing that you Sherlocks use to speculate and come up with some darn good guesses. I'll just say that I miss them already!

So here's a little bit to get you going on it, get the eagerness back ...

First a screenshot that shows the cover ...

Oh, shoot. You can read part of the prologue in that pic. Hell, maybe I'll just post it right here, anyway ...

Outside the historic seaside church the country’s first president once attended stood a sign with a proclamation that staggered her heart. Though fully prepared for it—it was her wedding day, after all—somehow seeing the white letters of their two names arranged in union on a lined black field meant to affirm to their guests they’d arrived at the correct wedding made it all seem luminously real. In one hour she would no longer be Maggie Becker.

It had been a long journey. A painful one at times, but one always with abounding love, even when moments were at their darkest. Love, yes, but for a long time rarely the truth. And though love could exist for a while without truth, surviving behind the shield of immaturity, it was insupportable. Lies were the ballast that curved love’s trajectory. They were all liars, horrible ones, but they’d been young, and the worst lies were the ones they told themselves.

A group of older men regaled with sudden deep laughter behind her, standing in a loose bespoke clutch on the slope of the lawn. Martin, Westlake, and some other cronies from Oxbow all on the grass, her father leading them, looking good in his tailored tuxedo. They smoked cigars, handed out by Martin while they waited for the ceremony to begin, and congratulated him on the marriage of his only daughter. Beyond them, a crooked wrought iron line ran the perimeter of the old Trinity cemetery, marking off mossy hundreds-year-old tombstones.

There was glad-handing amongst them now, a steward in black pants and a white dress shirt coming and taking away what remained of their expensive cigars, putting them in a black pail of sand he carried in one hand, the group breaking up. The men found their way inside the church to take their seats as her father made his way toward her, adjusting his cuff links and giving smiles and nodding to some who still lingered on the church’s steps, radiating his proud father-of-the-bride smile.

She stepped ahead, following the officiant, her father catching up and putting a hand on the small of her back as they gathered with the wedding party in the nave of the old wooden church. Martin popped a piece of gum in his mouth but she told him: “You still smell like cigar,” reaching to his tie and straightening it.

Though he looked at her sternly, he said, “You look beautiful today, Margaret. Your husband is a lucky man.”

Eyes narrowed, raising her chin to him, she slowly let herself smile. “He is,” she agreed, and now her father smiled as well.

The nervous banter amongst her bridesmaids and groomsmen thinned with quiet tension and she saw the officiant now making eye contact with them all. The room grew quiet. It was time to begin.

In twos, bridesmaids and groomsmen filed out, arm in arm. Maid of Honor next, heading out with a knowing wink and then a wide open but silent joyous scream. The flower girl and ring bearer followed. Martin let her assume her posture, get comfortable, clutching her bouquet low on her belly, over the life only she knew grew inside her.

Somewhere above them on the balcony that faced the altar, the processional began. The very traditional Wagner’s Bridal Chorus; Grace Cho—a girl she remembered from Tanglewood—on the massive pipe organ that bellowed through the church, resonating in all the old wood so she felt its vibrations in the floor and traveling up her legs, its power and volume and majesty making her shake.

Father linked an arm through hers tightly, taller than her even in her heels, but letting her form a diamond between waist and elbow where he could fit his forearm. Shoulders back, smiling now, she let him escort her to the mouth of the aisle.

Spring sunlight glowed off the chandeliers hanging slightly crooked down the center of the high cathedral ceiling, and her whole body tightened with excitement. Every face in the Trinity was turned to her, sequestered in their boxed pews, and she let her smile grow wider. On the beat, she took her first step to her new life walking the red carpet, eyes turned up to the pulpit, staggered diagonal lines of the bridal party leading up the steps to the pastor; Max and Cole there, waiting for her, both of them beaming …

  1. Congrats, KT, on the completion of this opus! I have no doubt it's incredible. Your talents express themselves most strikingly in long form like this -- "Learning Lessons" and "Cherry Blossoms" both achieve the very rare quality of combining steaming hot erotica with all the literary rewards one associates with a fine mainstream novel.

    That's a gorgeous cover, too.

Once you catch your breath from final editing and publication of "Recovering Maggie," please don't forget that back in November, you said you would release paperbacks of all the Maggie books. A hardcopy release of "Secret Maggie" followed immediately, but "Exploring" and "Discovering" still exist only as 1's and 0's. I'm eager to order them all and read the entire series as one epic story, on nice traditional ink and paper. And honestly, my own preferences aside, your work definitely deserves the tangibility and permanence of print publication.

  2. *sigh* Ok, I'll bite lol. Thank you KT for the morsel.

This would seem to be the start of a time jump like in Universe that JL was thinking might happen, but I think this is a teaser for the story itself, and after that enticing "Max and Cole beaming at her" line we are entered back to where we last left our deranged triumvirate, lol.

So, the wedding seems to indeed be postponed. Any fears that Max would come quickly crawling back are quelled. Still have to wonder if Maggie will "push the plate away" for a little bit considering the bad spot she is in with the man she was intending to marry. I can't imagine Cole is going to sit idly by as Maggie collects herself, alone. He's both the concerned friend and an eligible bachelor ...

I could also see the Kate, Jessie, Nia route, which is to explore a relationship with Cole while hubby ventures on his own. That usually ends poorly for the bull, although in CayPro is still unclear. Though the pretense for exploring her sexuality (as a learning experience before her marriage with Max) will be gone, I could see Cole prodding more daring behavior. I think this is where Jessie comes in. I said I didn't want to go further, but there's plenty of blanks to fill there.

Six years is a long time so there could be a whole mess of scenarios that directly refute what I say above. It's. also well past law school, so Maggie seems like she did the right thing with whoever she marries and waits until she is absolutely ready. And it seems like whoever it is she is marrying, she made amends with the men in our story to a point where they are willing to stand at her wedding (in whatever capacity that entails).

I don't know who wins, I just have my doubts it's a dark horse like Jay, I doubt they would be allowed as his groom's men ...

And it'd be infuriating if the answer is both win... booo!

    1. Who says Max and Cole have to be groomsmen? Maybe they're in Maggie's bridal party as she marries some rando? It's a modern wedding!

While I would love that, I'm assuming she's marrying either Max or Cole. And because it would take a lot of words for me to see how Max could be OK with her marrying Cole, I'm assuming she's marrying Max. But, we are up to 60,000 words, so who knows.

Whatever way it turns out, bravo again to KT for writing another master series.

    2. Although I'll throw in a crazy bet that Maggie is marrying one but is pregnant with the other's baby...oh what a tangled web that would be. We always gotta have paternity questions in a KT opus.

    3. How simple minded of me! Perhaps Maggie made Max Brides maid, ah Max, always the bride's maid, never the bride ...

      Delete
    4. That would be the ultimate cuckold moment though, being the "bride's maid" at the love our your life's wedding to your once best friend. I don't think KT is as diabolical as that though.

As with all these stories, I've developed enough sympathy for Max that all I want is for him to be happy at the end. Sounds like he will be...whether he's the one getting married to Maggie is the question. I don't see how he's there in the bridal party at a wedding for Maggie and Cole, but maybe there's a way that can be written. 6 years is a long time, and I'm also not sure what "after the twilight" means. So maybe its even longer than that moment we left them in the hotel room.

    5. Playing the advocate agian, id say we don't know for sure who the groom is. Doesnt bother me if either of the boys win but could our angry frustrated wrestler be in the mix? What if she went lesbo? Her and Jess?
Ok for the money max gets her back after telling papa bear to stuff his job offer. Getting established in his career. Than makes his move to repossess/recover Maggie from Cole. I dont know how im wrong but im pretty sure i am.

    6. JL, Twilight was the motel they were staying in during the ring pull.

John and JL you're right that we might not know who the guy is, and that too would suuuck. It has to be someone we know ...

It's a he though John lol, read pops and Maggie's little chat above.

      Delete
    7. Oh, forgot that...so yes it will be 6 years from that fateful afternoon.

The other "clue" that leads me to assume its Max is the Maid of Honor giving a "knowing wink and a silent but joyous scream." Jessie was Team Max and didn't like Cole, but there's no guarantee its actually her and a lot can change in 6 years. Maybe Cole won her over.

Of course there is another possibility: how do we know any of that is actually happening? Maybe the next chapter opens up and Maggie was just dreaming of her wedding day. Anything is possible.

My guess is still something along the lines of Max goes his separate way for a long time after the hotel, Cole and Maggie go to law school and date, but come to realize they are not meant to be, then something brings the 3 back together. I have an idea on that but will leave it to myself. This creates the opportunity for Max and Maggie to reconcile and get their HEA.

    8. Missed the wink too! My reading comprehension is poor ...

I think the maid of honor is female, and if I think the maid of honor would be anyone right now it would be Jess, but maybe it might be that girl that was invited over for dinner in 'Sharing Maggie.'

I am curious what people are basing Jess' dislike of Cole on? Is it based on the assumption Jessie had that Cole and Maggie were only together because Cole was forcing himself on her?

I feel like that whole moment was Jess incredulous that Maggie was with another man, and less about it being Cole. Cole even said, 'Jess it's me' as if she would assume he's a good guy, Jess did say 'I know' in almost a dismissive tone, like "that's the point" though ... based on Jessie's conversation with Maggie afterwards though. I took every piece of hesitation that Jess had when she was talking to Maggie about it that she was making sure that she wasn't hurting Max, and Jess got the assurances she was looking for and was on-board even if she didn't understand it. It was less about it being with Cole, in my opinion. Jess strikes me as adaptable though, so now she knows the score. Even if she is operating under false information (no Jess, Max is not okay with it).

Jess seems really intuitive though, so I imagine she might have a talk with Max later on, probably making it seem like their love triangle is normal, but really is finding out how much Max is really on board with it. Jess might have a different effect on this story than I originally thought ...

    9. Gah, my regular "no you didn't edit enough" self-reply ...

remove the period between 'though' and 'I' in the '... based on Jessie's conversation with Maggie afterwards though. I took every piece of hesitation ...' sentence.

Glad KT never has this problem!

    10. Could be me reading into Jessie's feelings, but I thought I remembered another interaction between her and Maggie where she indicated she didn't like Cole all that much. But maybe not, my memory isn't so great on details since its been a while since I read it.

The paragraph that now has me scratching my head is the second one, about the long journey and love, lies and the truth. I could read that as she ends up with Max or Cole.

"And though love can exist for a while without truth, surviving behind the shield of immaturity, it was insupportable." That could mean her love for Cole, but it could also mean her love for Max. Maybe that was shielded by their immaturity, and as they grew older they realized the truth was that it was a first love, but not a lasting love. I've gone back to that paragraph a few times now and I'm even more unsure what that line means.

      Delete
    11. It can be interpreted a few ways; it could mean that their love evolved to involve the truth which is supportable. Which would indicate Max, but you could also use it to describe Cole and how their relationship was founded on rocky reasoning and immaturity which is insupportable. I would lean towards it indicating Max because that paragraph as a whole doesn't fit as neatly to indicate Cole and the whole thing is talking about one person. At least I didn't get the impression that Cole and Maggie have been dishonest with each other, they've been pretty straight forward I think.

      Delete
    12. There's also a 6 year gap, plenty of time to make that paragraph fit more neatly to Cole.

      Delete
    13. JL- you might be right about Jessie, I just don't recall anything she said directly about her opinion of him.

I think you guys are brilliant with that paragraph breakdown, this is awesome stuff. I really like the little poetic forays that KT sprinkles moments with and that paragraph was a beaut.

I think there is indication that Maggie is talking about all three of them. They all lied to themselves and each other, and she is acknowledging that here. What was interesting is that Maggie thought lies helped to shape love, it helped her realize the truth of the love she wants, maybe?

I agree that I can see how how she describes her experience has helped her to conclude she loves either (or none) of the men in this story.

  4. I just want to take a minute to thank KT for writing stories that are well beyond the value she charges us. I look at the most recent stories that are available and see their lengths and price tag and there is just no comparison. There's a short that 5 people have reviewed already that's 17 pgs and costs 5.49 and, of course, not rentable. What a scam!

We lucky folk are awaiting a full size novel that will likely be under $5. But even if it's a little more ... full sized novel ...

She's the best there is, and it's not even close.

    1. I can always detect in these types of stories when you have to set aside the realism and accept that certain things are just going to happen because that's what's going to happen. You know the scenes. Generally, the more uncharacteristic for the character the better (so Size Curious Brat isn't that kind of story). But it's hard to make those characters to do those things and make it believable. Most of the time when I get to these scenes, I'm disappointed in the execution and almost always immediately lose interest in the rest of the story. They're critical scenes that set the stage for the rest of the story and if they're off, then the rest of the story pieces that otherwise might be excellent lose a lot of their effect.

KT is the best at making that scene believable. And once you get passed that scene, the rest of the book reads itself (and I imagine helps with writing). Can't put it down.

    3. I agree KTs plots and story lines especially the more sophiticated ones are in the "could have been" category rather than the "not even"
The charactors are so very believable and real.

On the reviews i check for "verified owner" and than you got to read the first sentence to make sure the owner was not gifted a copy. I normally wont purchase a book under 100 pages. Unless its from an author i know like a KT short.
If the story is that short might as well just put it up on ohw or literotica or one of the hundreds of other sites.

That specific scene in each story is exactly what I read this genre for, and I totally agree that one of KT's greatest writing strengths (to the point of being almost unique in the field as far as I can tell) is the believability of that transition.

    7. WA and Glaucon- very interesting thoughts, I think it's extremely accurate if I'm picking up what you're saying correctly. I hate when I read stories and feel as if the erotic elements are distinct from the characters themselves, as if the writer is checking off items they need a character to do or say, and lose sight of the characters they've been developing the whole time.

Obviously, sex is sex, and good sex is good sex, so certain things are obligatory in those instances, but if it feels like the action is appropriate and stays true to reality, even if somewhat (sometimes very) idealized, it becomes addicting. KT has one hell of that.

    1. Yeah, you're probably right ... My thoughts as to how that could work is A) 6 years is a long time, especially when you're 21 years old and B) Like you said, Max is a decent guy, capable of putting his ego down.

      Delete
    2. I can't see it either in my head, and I've been trying to. Also, if Maggie ended up with Cole it probably would happen quicker than 6 years, and there wouldn't be much drama there. Only way is if Maggie and Max end up reconciling only for her to realize over time she wants to be with Cole. Then it leads to the same issue: how is Max OK enough with it to be at their wedding, in their wedding party, beaming as Maggie walks down the aisle to marry Cole. I just can't see it.

      Delete
    3. Yea ditto on that. It take some serious personal growth to get me to go that route. The only thing that springs to mine is if after max exits stage left at the ring pull. Cole sees that maggie really loves max. Maybe he thinks over time she ll forget or learn to love him more. But each year becomes worse than the one before. Until Cole reaches an ephiphany that Maggies true love is max and max s true love is Mags.
Than he plays match maker, a uniter instead of divider.
